This column begins with List of

 GONE, BUT NOT FOR-GOTTEN

 classmates,followed by a

list of

LOST OR STRAYED CATS.

Please study those two lists and see

if you can provide the whereabouts

of any lost souls, or advise us of the

 passing of any classmates.

We’d like very much to expand the

last listing of CATS WITH KNOWN

ADDRESSES.

The current lists (as of the date shown

with each list) has been the result of

research by the MAD47 Reunion

Committee commencing a few decades ago.

Although we’ve just pulled off a

highly-successful reunion marking 60 years since graduation, it is our intent to maintain communication. Who knows? We might even think

about a 65th! More likely we’ll be looking at the possibility of less formal gatherings on a more frequent basis, coincident with the odd-year

"ALL CLASS" coincident with Monrovia Day

 weekend.

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR OUR

MAD ALL-CLASS REUNION

ABOARD THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER  USS MIDWAY MUSEUM

OCTOBER 1 -2, 2010

I'm sure all living members of the 1947 class ...and probably anyone at MAD during our four years... will remember Joanne Allen, a bubbly and outgoing pretty blond. She pops up at our reunions and lives in the San Diego area.  Hopefully Joanne will be with us during the MAD All Class Reunion being planned for next year aboard the museum ship USS MIDWAY (CV 41) at San Diego; read about the reunion on the MAD 50 page. Thanks to classmate Bill Stevens, also of San Diego, for sending the following article from the San Diego Union-Tribune. We now know a lot more about Joanne.

Joanne Tweed is a one of a kind.

She was born in New Orleans 80 years ago at the start of the Great Depression.

And she grew up a tomboy in Los Angeles, raised by Helen Molloy, her bighearted single mom who would open her home and her table to anyone in need.

Helen's generosity and her admonition to her only child — “there isn't anything you can't do if you're willing to work hard enough” — still guide Joanne today.

So she doesn't think it's a big deal to tool around her adopted hometown of Pacific Beach on a bicycle primarily to stay in shape.

And when folks say it's newsworthy that a person her age would return to the classroom and get certified to provide a vital service for total strangers, Joanne scoffs.

“Who wants to read about some 80-year-old lady going to school?” she asks.

But Van Hillier, coordinator of teacher training at San Diego State University's American Language Institute, tells you it was quite remarkable for Joanne to complete the institute's amTEFL program.

The intensive four-week training course prepares and certifies students to teach English as a second language.

“I've had students who have been in their 50s and 60s,” says Hillier, who's been with the Language Institute for 10 years. “But I've never had anyone as old as 80 coming in. (Joanne) is very energetic and experienced.”

Joanne is also committed to helping people, especially those who speak only a foreign language, gain understanding and command of English.

With a bachelor's degree she earned in psychology and speech education at Fresno State College, the mother of three and grandmother of six is a born teacher.

She's taught bridge; she's taught tennis. And 17 years ago, she started International Bridges, a kind of consulting firm through which she helps businesses, mainly overseas, find goods and services they need.

The work got her involved in the Southeast Asian business market. She spent time in Taiwan, China and Vietnam, where she became fully acquainted with both the needs of people who want to learn English and the needs of foreigners in foreign lands.

“I had a lot of young adults and kids calling me ‘grandma’ and asking me to help them with their English. So I did,” Joanne says. “I didn't have a teaching degree or certification at the time — but you do what you have to do.”

She figures she helped hundreds of young people in those three countries become proficient in English. She also discovered, she says, that English words are learned more easily when set to music.

So she used her hands-on experience and extensive research to create an online reading program — Rhyming to Reading American English — that she says could be put to music.

“I want to do that,” she says. “Because I know kids all over the world could learn to read English correctly with this system — they'd sing their way to learning to read.”

Joanne's original intention when she first walked into the American Language Institute was to get certified and return to Southeast Asia. But recent unexpected financial reversals forced her to curtail many of her travel plans.

Then one of her grown daughters reminded her how there are pressing needs right here at home for people to learn English.

And so Joanne keeps her mission focused within her bicycle range.

Since earning her certificate this summer, she has been working as a class facilitator at the Language Institute. The class is called “Variety Is the Spice of Life.”

“I'm a never-say-give-up-can't-do person,” Joanne says.

She's her mother's child.
